COULD YOUR BUSINESS EMPLOY AN APPRENTICE?

Published 05/02/2018

We share our recent inteview with North Tynesdie Business Forum below:

As a holder of the North Tyneside Apprentice Standard Award, Tynemouth Decorators Ltd has a three-year apprenticeship scheme for budding tradesmen in North Tyneside.

We sit down with Stephen Hull, founder of the company, to chat with him about their commitment to training their team.

Nice to speak to you Stephen, as a holder of the North Tyneside Apprentice Standard, why are you so committed to apprenticeships?

As a company, we need to make a commitment to our future workforce. Without apprenticeships we would soon run out of good, reliable and skilled people to work for us. By committing to running apprenticeships ourselves we can guarantee that the training our apprentices are receiving is of the highest quality. I believe that our commitment to such quality, and our good relationship with North Tyneside Council, has helped us in securing amazing project work with companies such as Kier North Tyneside. As a result, we’re proud to have worked on projects like Whitley Bay Playhouse, the Stagline building in North Shields, The Roman Baths in Wallsend and a Grade II listed chapel in Whitley Bay.

How long have you held the standard?

We achieved the standard around three years ago, in 2015. We were one of the first companies in North Tyneside to achieve the award, something about which we’re very proud. The standard ensures that anyone looking for an apprenticeship in our industry knows that we deliver a high standard of training.

All of your tradesmen are qualified with City & Guilds and NVQ Achievements. How many of these tradesmen started as an apprentice with your company?

When we achieved the standard three years ago, we had four apprentices, all drawn from the North Tyneside area, working with us. Two of those apprentices joined the company almost 10 years ago and have enjoyed very successful progression in those years. All four are still working for us. In total we have helped seven people get NVQ qualifications in painting and decorating.

What benefits does this have for your company?

As we train the apprentices, we can keep a close eye on the training they receive. This just means that we can make sure they follow the high standards we set out when we first established the business. They go on to become highly skilled and confident in the work they do, and we are able to hold on to excellent staff to deliver an outstanding service to our customers. Our customers vary from week to week; we often work in domestic homes, grade 2 listed buildings, restaurants, leisure centres offices and much more. Because of this diversity, our skilled apprentices need the expertise and experience to work in various conditions and using many different skills. Our policy is always to do the best we can, regardless of the job type.

The theme of National Apprenticeship Week 2018 is “Apprenticeships Work” why do Apprenticeships Work for Tynemouth Decorators?

New apprentices can bring many things to the table, fresh ideas, eagerness to learn, a great helping hand for the senior workers, and the feel-good factor for existing staff to have a new face around. But much more importantly they are the future for the company. Without skilled apprentices our industry would suffer badly. Every trade needs a skilled workforce to draw from and to continue the important job of training future painters and decorators. We pride ourselves on doing just that.
